Beautiful Park In Norfolk, Nebraska

Standing between Sand Hills and farmlands, Norfolk is located at the heart of the Elkhorn Valley. It is the major retail trade center for Northeast Nebraska with manufacturing, farming, wholesaling, and retailing being the major economic activities. Formed in the 1860s, Norfolk is now home to approximately 2.44 lakh people.

Norfolk is also known for its numerous parks located in and around the city. Recreation has always been an important part of the overall mental and physical well-being of people. Everyone needs some open space to breathe freely and get away from the cramped city lanes and concrete jungle. Apart from being an indispensable mental need for people, parks play an important part in the development of sustainable modern cities.

Norfolk is home to as many as 15 developed parks with modern facilities at your disposal. Here is a list of the best parks in Norfolk with their copious amenities to suit your recreational and social appetite.

Ta-Ha Zouka Park

Located along the Elkhorn River, the Ta-Ha Zouka Park spans around 180 acres. It offers a plethora of facilities such as numerous playground areas, picnic shelters, picnic tables, and barbeque grills. There are four cabins available for rent, although no overnight stay is allowed.

Located between the Elkhorn river and a lagoon is the picturesque Ta-Ha Zouka Park campground which can accommodate traditional tents as well as campers with an option of electrical hookups and concrete pads.

One could spend some time fishing in the river or the lagoon, which also happens to be the central attraction of the park. The park is also the starting point of the Cowboy Trail which is a 321-mile long trail.

Other athletic features of the park include

1. Horseshoe Court Complex – host to the championship play, the complex is lighted and fenced and also has an underground sprinkler system. There are individual cover pits with fence hangers.

2. Four-Court Sand Volleyball Area – one can often see matches being played as this is one of the most popular parts of the park.

3. Adult Softball Complex – this is a three-field lighted complex with amenities like scoreboards, bleachers for viewing events, and sprinkler systems. There are two other ballfields located west of the complex as well.

4. Youth Ball Field Complex – located towards the east of the Softball complex is the Field Complex with amenities like lightings, scoreboards, and shaded bleachers.

5. River Run Disc Golf Course – This has now been expanded to a 19-hole golf complex and disc golfers often find it more exciting than the Skyview Park Disc Golf Course.

Skyview Park

This 175-acre park was built as a part of a flood control project in 1971. The principal feature of the park is Skyview Lake spanning around 50 acres. It homes herons, ducks, painted turtles, and muskrats. One can enjoy activities like fishing and non-motorized boating. During winters, you can also enjoy ice-fishing although ice-skating is not allowed. There are a couple of boat racks and as many 150 feet long rocked jetties and a 100 foot T head fishing pier at hand at this location.

If you are looking for a spot for your picnic plans, this can be the end of your quest. The park offers amenities like picnic tables, barbeque grills, 2 small and 4 large picnic shelters, and a large playground area. There is also a cycling/biking trail running over 2.5 miles surrounding the lake. Other facilities include bathrooms on each end of the lake (north and south), a bandstand, and a cross country course. There is an annual 4th of July fireworks that is attended by hundreds of people.

The Skyview Arboretum, a project started in 1993, is now home to almost 160 different varieties of plantings. One could also purchase memorial trees to be planted at the site with an identification plate.

Embrace Park 

As the name suggests, this park embraces people and children breaking barriers of physical and social distinctions. This is an all-inclusive well-planned park with an accessible playground, which has become an important need in the US where almost one in every five children suffers from a disability.  

Apart from the playground, a splash pad was also added in 2018. With temperatures seeing a new high every year, these urban oases are fast becoming popular among kids. In addition to that 60 new parking spaces were also built in 2018.

Spanning over 6.4 acres, some other amenities offered by the park include accessible bathrooms, outdoor and indoor sensory lightings, shaded picnic tables, and a multi-purpose athletic field.

Liberty Bell Park

Spread across almost 5 acres, the Liberty Bell Park is home to the famous Liberty Bell Pool, which is an open-air urban swimming pool. You could spend some fun time with your family and friends. The pool is also available for booking in case of private parties. 

There is a youth softball field where one could often see matches being played, especially in the summers. Apart from the picnic tables and bathrooms, there is also a girl’s fastpitch indoor training facility available at the park. It also has a small playground where children can have a good time.

Veteran’s Memorial Park

Known as the home of Memorial Baseball Field, Memorial Football Field, Miracle Statepark, and Aquaventure, the Veteran’s Memorial Park spans approximately 21 acres. 

The Aquaventure has facilities that provide hours of enjoyment for everyone. It has an amazing 300-foot rat slide and a 200-foot body slide. It also has a huge wave pool with challenging games such as water walks. The octopus PlayStation is appealing to younger children.

Memorial Baseball Field accommodates the American Legion baseball program. It is a fully built baseball field with features like lighted fields, locker rooms for players, a ticket booth, indoor lightings, a scoreboard, and a sound system.

The football field sees schools such as the Norfolk Public, Norfolk Catholic, Lutheran High Northeast High schools play soccer. Apart from being a standard size high school football field, it offers facilities like bleachers for viewers, a concession stand, scoreboards, and a press box.

Central Park

Located on 705 South 6th street, across the Norfolk Public Junior High School, the Central Park spans over 3 acres.  

The park homes the World War II memorial which is a popular historical retreat around the area. It has two lighted tennis courts which are striped so that it can be used for Pickle Ball as well. A lighted basketball court and a lighted playground area make it a good landing place for children and youngsters alike.

With facilities like barbeque grills, picnic tables, and hygienic bathrooms, Central Park can also be a fine picnic spot for you. It also has a raised bandstand which hosts occasional musician programs. There is a small library too from where you can borrow some books and a BUtterfly garden to spend your evenings.

Johnson Park 

Comprising 6 acres, Johnson Park is located at 101 East Nebraska Avenue. This can be the picnic spot you have been looking for. With amenities like covered picnic shelters, picnic tables, and barbeque grills, this park can be the perfect find for you. In addition to this, there are small multiple playground areas for your kids to indulge in. The presence of a basketball court recreational soccer field lures the more athletic youngsters as well.

1. Berry Hill Park

Located at 2711 Clearfield Drive, Berry Hill Park is at the heart of the rapidly developing northeastern part of the city. With facilities like a sand base volleyball court and a baseball area, this is a major appeal to the sturdy young population of the city. It also has a multi-purpose area with two basketball courts.

2. Nord Park

It is a smallish park of ¾ acres located at 1007 Nord Street. In spite of not being as large as other parks around the city, it offers amenities like a small playground area and a basketball court. It can also be a decent picnic spot where you can avail facilities like covered picnic shelters and barbeque grills.

3. North 4th Street Park

As the name suggests, it is located along North 4th street, east of the Norfolk Public school. Spread across over 4.3 acres, this is an alluring location for the youngsters as it provides provisions such as three lighted tennis courts and a couple of lighted basketball courts. There is also a small playground for younger kids.

4. Westside Park

This one-acre park is located between Madison and Westside Avenue, towards the outskirts of the city. Along with a one-on-one basketball court, it also has a small playground area and facilities such as picnic tables that provide recreational opportunities.
